Ickey Woods, a former NFL player with the Cincinnati Bengals, is best known for his infamous “Ickey Shuffle” touchdown dance, and more recently for his commercial with GEICO as he shuffles his way to the deli counter. 

The Ickey Shuffle was not happenstance. The notorious dance by Ickey Woods was well thought out. Its original purpose was to pay tribute to his mother - who was going to be in the stands and watch Ickey play in Cincinnati against the Cleveland Browns. His mother travelled all the way from Fresno to be there and if Ickey scored, he wanted to surprise her with the dance. During practice, he shared his dance with some of his teammates, and they loved it, but Ickey felt it just wasn’t right yet. He added a couple of other moves, and the Ickey Shuffle was born. 

Was the Shuffle risky? Of course it was. But Ickey Woods took a calculated risk that branded him for life in the most positive light. Everywhere he goes, he is recognized and is asked to do the Shuffle. Kids playing a game of street football still imitate the Shuffle when they score a touchdown.
